Vegan Etsy. [07 Dec 2009|11:49am]

veganpeople

[pregnantbones]
Has anyone here ever purchased vegan goodies from Etsy?

With Christmas coming up, I'm really considering ordering a bunch of goodies for stocking stuffers. Like peanut butter cups and fudge. Only thing is the shipping is pretty outrageous since it's food and I could really make most of the stuff myself, but that's what Etsy's all about... stuff you could make, but don't.

Is it worth it? Which sellers do you recommend? Am I crazy? Should I just make the stuff myself and stop being a lazy bones?

How should I respond to these inquiries? [06 Dec 2009|07:53pm]

[ mood | bouncy ]

I don't believe I have run across these arguments before.

First one goes like this:

"What about chimpanzees? They are physically 99% like us and they are omnivores - and their teeth are very close to ours." Really?

Second one goes like this:

"Farmland for vegetables kills more animals than the cow and pig slaughterhouses combined. True its smaller animals that get killed on the farmlands, but still if we're talking numbers, it kills more animals so basically the only way to be vegan is to eat nothing. So being vegan isn't doing anything because no matter what you do animals are being killed by the billions."

Yeesh - not sure how to respond to these...suggestions? Thanks!

AR Photographic Series - Australia [07 Dec 2009|10:01am]

veganpeople

[cupcake_tattoo]
I have just begun an animal rights themed photo series so if anyone is passionate about this subject and willing to do what it takes for me to realise my vision please let me know. The aim is to create a series of thought provoking photographs and hold an exhibition, the proceeds of all sales and donations taken at the door will go towards an animal charity, most likely Animals Australia.. The first of the series can be seen here

I would especially love to work with other vegans on this project for obvious reasons. You will probably not end up looking pretty and glamorous, I'm looking for people willing to help me tell a story. The story isn't pretty. I have lots of my own ideas, but would also love to hear AR related issues that are close to your heart and ways in which you think I could translate that to single images.

My ideas include (but not limited to):

-Factory farming (meat, dairy, eggs).
-International Animal smuggling
-Domestic pet abuse and neglect
-Puppy mills
-Circus
-Caged animals
-Pollution affecting animals on land and sea
-Animals as food/products (wrapped in plastic)
-Fashion (leather, fur, silk etc)
-How disgusting consuming animal products is
-Gelatin (this idea is to have a bowl of jelly with bits of bones and tendons in it. So many people don't know what they are eating! I don't know how to create the bones and tendons without using the real thing. Help! ideas?!)
-Road kill
-Urban sprawl taking animals habitats/food
-Horse/dog racing
-Animal Testing
-Fishing/other 'sports'
-Mulesing

veganpeople

[affectionjunkie]
has anyone ever tried making breaded tofu on a griddle. I had mine out to make pancakes this morning and figured I could try it out to make tofu tonight before putting it away.

any thoughts/help/advice/nay-saying??

EDIT: I did it with a southern fried tofu recipe and lightly oiled the griddle. It worked very well.

Geeking away happily today and notice two recent research release stories on the anti cancer benefits of soy.

Soy Peptide Lunasin Has Anti-Cancer, Anti-Inflammatory Properties
ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2009) — Two new University of Illinois studies report that lunasin, a soy peptide often discarded in the waste streams of soy-processing plants, may have important health benefits that include fighting leukemia and blocking the inflammation that accompanies such chronic health conditions as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. [The story continues here.]

Soy Component May Be Key to Fighting Colon Cancer
ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2009) — A study conducted by Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland scientists identifies a new class of therapeutic agents found naturally in soy that can prevent and possibly treat colon cancer, the third most deadly form of cancer. Sphingadienes (SDs) are natural lipid molecules found in soy that research shows may be the key to fighting colon cancer. [Continues here.]

Two more from earlier this year that were linked to with the above stories. Women and smokers take note.

Eating Soy Early In Life May Reduce Breast Cancer Among Asian Women
ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2009) — Asian-American women who ate higher amounts of soy during childhood had a 58 percent reduced risk of breast cancer, according to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. [Continues here.]

Superfood Soy Linked To Reduction In Smoker's Lung Damage Risk
ScienceDaily (June 28, 2009) — People who eat lots of soy products have better lung function and are less likely to develop the smoking-associated lung disease COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). A new study has shown that consumption of a wide variety of soy products can be associated with a reduction in the risk of COPD and other respiratory symptoms. [Continues here.]

Might be worth forwarding onto those special people in our lives who think soy will kill us all.

Vegan banana bread w/ walnuts and raisins. I was pleased to be able to eschew the margarine as well as the eggs and dairy for a less fatty version. It still needs a bit of work, but the recipe is shaping up. Roswell approved.

Winter hats [05 Dec 2009|09:34pm]

veganpeople

[freakshownia]
I need a super cute winter hat. Something with bright colors, poofy things, etc. Any suggestions for places to shop? Preferably I'd like to pick one up IRL rather than order online, but I don't know what stores have hats that are both cute and non-wool. Thanks!

[Edit: I bought two ones that I LOVE at Target, thanks!]

davenportgrandjury

this is good for Dec 4th to Dec 19th.

Our friend Carrie Feldman is currently in jail for refusing to testify in front of a secret grand jury in Davenport, Iowa. The grand jury was most likely trying to get information about the local animal rights movement and the activists who are out on the streets fighting for animal liberation. As you read this, Carrie is sitting in jail lonely and bored. She would love to get a letter from you. Really, it would make her day. If you send her a letter, we will send YOU something. Anything from stickers, shirts, and patches.

In order to prove that you wrote a letter to her, you will write the letter via email and send it to davenportgrandjury@riseup.net . Your email is then printed out and given to Carrie. I will be able to confirm the letter if sent this way. Please make this as lengthy as you can, the longer, the better. Make sure to include your mailing address in the body of the email, so she can write you back!

If you don't care about getting something in return, then you can write her a real letter and send it yourself!

After you email your letter, send us an email telling us that you wrote Carrie info@veganthis.org. Let us know your address and what size of shirt you are ( Womyn sizes or Unisex sizes ). Just a thank you from us for writing Carrie.

Washington County Jail.
2185 Lexington Blvd. PO Box 6

Mail rules: nothing graphic, no perfumes, nothing but the address on the envelope. She can have 10 small pictures total in her cell. No Polaroids. You cannot send stamps; she has to buy them with commissary money

Non-vegan parents and their ways [05 Dec 2009|10:31pm]

veganpeople

[pagelife]
I'm not sure if I tagged right but I just wanted to share my thoughts.

I've recently turned vegan, maybe 6-8 months ago. I understand that my parents are worried because of the cut-off from meat, dairy and all the animal products and the fact that I'm only 15. My friends respect my decision, I definitely do (& am proud of it), but my parents are different otherwise.

Whenever we get into a quarrel or etc they always bring up my veganism, as if it's some sort of crime and will say stuff (which they will try to impose on me):
"Why must you be a vegan? Just eat eggs and fish or drink milk!"
"You don't want to drink my soup because it's got pork bones in it right?"
There's a lot more (some really bogus and offensive) and I'm not going to type all.

See the problem is I'm the only vegan in the family. So I understand that cooking stuff for me is a hassle and whatever, and I've offered to cook my own food. But they don't seem to listen.
I feel sort of guilty proclaiming that I'm a vegan when I am constantly forced to drink soups that have been boiled with meat, or eat bread with milk powder. They say it's just a "little bit". But I can't help but feel a little guilty and disgusted with myself, is that so wrong?

Well, "You live in my house under my rules" they say. I kind of hate that.
Any comments whatsoever?

JANUARY 2010 ELLE MAGAZINE [04 Dec 2009|10:16pm]

[status_hood]
[ mood | anxious ]

I am wondering if anyone can help me sort this out. From what I've seen there are 3 editions of the January 2010 Elle magazine. One with Lady GaGa on the cover and two others will Britney on the cover.

According to MTV, the black and white cover will only go to subscribers. I haven't seen any January 2010 edition in stores yet, but does anyone know if the color cover of her will be in stores as well as the Lady GaGa copy? I want all 3 copies so I am trying to figure out how to get ahold of them since I don't have a subscription. I e-mailed Elle yesterday but haven't heard anything.

If anyone knows what's up, please let me know! I have a copy of almost every US magazine that Brit's been on the cover of and REALLY want both editions of this one! Thanks so much!!

NY Farm Sanctuary needs (physical) help over the holidays [04 Dec 2009|05:52am]

veganpeople

[richips]
Hi friends,
Remember that amazing time interning at Farm Sanctuary i couldnt stop yapping about? Want to have a time like it?
I just got a message that they're down a bunch of staff and interns at the moment and are in a real pinch for help. This is great for those who want to intern, but can't commit a whole month, and who have time off from work/school/whatever. They need help between December 22nd and January 2nd. even if you can just offer a few days, it would help. If i wasn't out floundering on the other side, i'd be there in a second, but unfortunately, that's the way it is.

Think of it is a conscientious vacation. It's beautiful in Watkins Glen, it's near Ithaca which is Ithacawesome, the animals are amazing creatures who will warm your heart (there is a chunk of mine missing since i left), the staff are some of the most incredible people i have ever met, you learn so much, and it's a real spirit experience.

check out www.farmsanctuary.org, call 607-583-2225 ext. 221, and go have an amazing life changing experience! and take me with you in spirit.

snow boots [04 Dec 2009|10:37am]

veganpeople

[rekling]
I have checked the tags, but the most specific information is a bit old, and as manufacturers change their styles periodically, I decided it's worth asking.

I am (finally) going to buy snow boots (I've been in snowy cold climates all my life, but haven't had snow boots in a good 10 years or so).

It gets very cold and icy here, as well as snowy.

Here's what I'm looking for:
higher than ankle height!
waterproof (at least around the foot) for slush-protection
good tread
preferably between $50 and $70, but definitely under $100

Last year's models are ideal, because then I can try to find it on a discount website.

Columbia (which has very impressive customer service, so I wanted to buy from them) tells me that none of their boots are vegan, but to try Montrail (which I guess they own). Montrail's website doesn't have anything that looks too wintery, but I emailed them in case.

The question is: Do you love your winter/snow boots? And if so, what brand and model are they?

oh coworkers... [04 Dec 2009|08:42am]

veganpeople

[affectionjunkie]
At the morning meeting yesterday before work my one coworker comes up and says "You'll be proud of me!" I inquire why and she replies.

"Well, since I stopped eating factory farmed meat I have joined a CSA...."

at this point I was excited. I didn't know she was giving up factory farm meat. CSA = maybe more vegetables???? going more vegetarian?

she continued "and the CSA has grass fed beef and organic pork and chicken! When I was putting in my orders I thought about how proud you'd be of me!"

at this point I cried a little bit inside but just said "oh, okay....I think the meeting is starting."

EDIT: I understand it might be steps in the right direction for her and as a vegan that slowly transitioned I can understand the harm reduction kind of idea here. I posted this because I was upset that she thought of me while saying which animals she wanted killed.

Vegan fiction? [03 Dec 2009|11:20am]

veganpeople

[badmoviescript]
I'm looking for a few fiction books to read that have vegan sensitivities and/or vegan protagonists. I'm almost finished with J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace and will read some of his other work soon. I also just finished reading Zadie Smith's White Teeth which was incredible and everyone should read it. I'm currently waiting for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close By Jonathan Safran Foer to come into my local used book store, but aside from that I'm not sure what else to look for. Ideas?

Visiting Paris [02 Dec 2009|09:25pm]

veganpeople

[harvestl]
I checked the tags, and I couldn't find something quite like what I wanted to ask. So it looks like I am actually going to be able to go to Paris to visit my dad for a couple weeks after Christmas. He's there for a couple months on business, so I'm hoping that he has a kitchen and will be able to cook dinner. However, it's the rest of the day that I'm worried about. I've checked Happy Cow, and the memories are filled with recommendations about the falafels, but even with how much I love falafels, I can't imagine eating that for two weeks.

So what could I take that I could pack in a little bag to eat while out and about? And for breakfast. I was planning on those clif builders bars, but that doesn't seem healthy to just eat those for two weeks. I don't have the money to eat out every day (I am only able to fly over there because I got a buddy pass from a friend and because I haven't seen my dad in ages) and I don't really trust that whole telling them I don't eat dairy thing. I traveled to France while on semester abroad back when I was still omni, so I'm perfectly fine passing on the foos-as-culture thing. Plus, stopping to buy lunch would mean I would have to interact with people, and I just don't like doing that.

So what would you suggest? Peanut butter for breakfast, and get lots of fruit there? Oh, and what about the airplane? I should end up on a non-stop flight direct to Paris and back, but I'll be flying standby, so even if the airline has vegan meals, I won't be able to order one.

Thanks so much!!
